A fun AR alphabet book inviting children to learn about insects
We worked with our former dear lecturer to help her initiative come to life through design and animation. The “Insects’ Alphabet” book is aimed at 4-6 year olds, offering an interactive learning experience through AR, where insects become alive as they pop out of the book pages.
Buttercup Learning inspires children to go outside, discover and learn facts about nature, so we wanted our designs to reflect these principles. We started by creating a character line up that looked adventurous, curious and eager to learn.
Since the book encouraged family activities and provided conservation facts, we designed two style frames including an exploring family in nature. To put more emphasis on the insects and nature elements, we went for a surreal look where characters are small next to huge leaves and giant insects. While the character designs were more stylized, we kept the insects’ proportions more realistic for educational purposes,
When it came to printing, we designed the spread layout, including both the alphabet letter and its corresponding insect.
We went for a cut out thick font, along with subtle hand drawn textures applied on the graphical illustrations, in order to keep the childish/human feel to the artwork.
We created animation loops for each insect, which were then used by Zubr, a tech studio that turned the book into an interactive AR experience.
